College Visions is made possible through the generosity of people like you! In this edition, we feature Carla Shalaby, a Wellesley College professor, teacher, scholar, and committed CV donor.
Why is college access an important issue to you?
What's important to me is for young people to have choice - choice in where to live, in what to study, in who to be with, in what to become. If they choose college, then I want them to have full access, support, and equity in the process of applying and attending the college of their choice.
Tell us about your professional background.
I'm a former elementary school teacher and now a graduate student in Culture, Communities, and Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Currently, I direct the elementary teacher certification program at Wellesley College and teach courses to undergraduates on understanding and improving our schools in the image of justice.
In addition to giving, how have you stayed connected to CV?
I recently got to attend and participate in the Interview Prep Day. Being in the CV space was a treat, and bearing witness to way people were together in that space was a refreshing reminder about the meaning of community.
What impact do you make when you donate to CV?
I hope the donation signals my appreciation for the CV family -- the staff who guide young people and the young people who guide one another. More than the work they do, I am grateful for the space they've created and I hope donating allows them to keep that space vibrant and thriving.
